American Chiropractic & Acupuncture May Newsletter 928-680-9500 ANNOUNCEMENTS: Dr. Talley will be out of the office Wednesday May 6th through Tuesday May 12th. He will be back in the office on Wednesday May 13th. Our hours that day will be 1p.m. to 6p.m. We will resume regular office hours on Thursday. We will also be working Saturday May 16th. A healthful tip from your Massage Therapist, Natalie Van Rooy, LMT. Did you know: Misalignments and problems in the musculo-skeletal system can impede the natural healing process, and often causes dysfunction and pain? Together, chiropractic and massage facilitate the natural healing process by aligning the spine and massage relieves muscle tension and warms up the soft tissues. This makes joints more pliable and makes your adjustment last longer. Stretching: Stretching is one of the simplest forms of exercise. It does not require any special equipment and can be done any time and any place. Stretching is a physical activity that elongates connective tissues, muscles and other tissues. The benefits associated with stretching include: • Reducing muscle tension and relaxing the body • Improved coordination and freer movement of body and limbs • Increased range of motion in the associated joints • Prepare the body for physical activity • Preventing injuries from tight muscles during physical activity • Creating a mind body connection • Promoting circulation • Reduce the risk of back problems • Reduce muscle soreness after exercise It is never too late to begin a stretching routine. Regardless of age or activity level, stretching increases your ability to do your everyday activities. Stretching can be performed any time you feel the desire to do so. During your next chiropractic appointment, ask Dr. Talley which stretches would be best for you. American Chiropractic is Better Chiropractic. Dr. Daniel W. Talley B.S.D.C. Stretching is a critical part of any workout. Stretches should be done both before and after exercising. It helps to prevent injury while exercising, and to aid in recovery after a workout. Stretching is also a good way to help increase your flexibility and reduce some of the physical effects of stress. It's good to stretch all the major muscle groups in your body regardless of which area your workout will focus on. However, you should concentrate most of your stretching on the areas that you will primarily be using in your workout. For example, if you are going to be running, you should do several different types of leg stretches, but you should also stretch your shoulders, neck and sides. Never bounce while stretching. Move into and out of each stretch slowly and fluidly, and hold each stretch steadily for at least ten seconds. You might feel some slight discomfort in the area being stretched, but if it is painful stop immediately. Each person is built differently and has different flexibility levels. Never push your body further than it can comfortably and safely go. |

People taking the recommended daily amount of 4,700 milligrams decreased their systolic blood pressure (the top number) by up to six points and their diastolic (the bottom number) by up to four points. Researchers say this could lower heart-disease risk by 15 percent. Potassium increases blood levels of nitric oxide, which dilates arteries and prevents them from becoming clogged. Get your fill of potassium with bananas, strawberries, spinach, tuna, halibut and cod. Allergies and Acupuncture With spring’s sunshine and flowers come wind and pollen, which for many people signals the onset of allergy season. Tree pollens are the most prevalent pollens in the spring and many trees are prolific pollinators. Grass and weed pollens follow in late spring and summer, and airborne mold spores can be found almost year round, as well as other common allergens such as dust, dust mites, and animal dander. What are allergies? Allergic rhinitis, or hay fever, is an example of misplaced immunity. It is a learned response by the immune system wherein rapid physiological changes resulting in itchy eyes and throat, sinus congestion and sneezing, asthma, and even diarrhea are produced. Typically, exposure to an allergen such as tree pollen elicits a massive release of IgE antibodies which attach to white blood cells known as mast cells. These cells are mostly located in the lungs and upper respiratory tract, the lining of the stomach and the skin. When these cells are stimulated, they release a number of chemicals including histamine which produce the allergic symptoms. While many over-the-counter remedies promise symptomatic relief, unfortunately they cause side-effects such as dizziness, fatigue, insomnia, nervousness, dryness and gastro-intestinal disturbance. Acupuncture offers an effective treatment for allergies. It can help bring relief of symptoms, address the causes of allergies, correct imbalances of the immune system (oversensitive reactions), prevent the occurrence of infection, and allow healing of tissues of the sinuses. This leads to substantial long-term health benefits in managing allergies, without unpleasant side effects. If you or someone you know suffer from these unbearable seasonal allergies, call 928-680-9500 today and set up an appointment with Dr. Talley to receive acupuncture. You do not have to spend another season living with allergies. American Chiropractic is Better Chiropractic. Dr. Daniel W. Talley B.S.D.C. |

It has only 19 calories and less than 4 grams of carbohydrates per scoop. Red Alert is a great pick-me-up in the afternoon when you are starting to feel sleepy or sluggish. For the month of March, which is Caffeine Awareness Month, we, at American Chiropractic are having a special on our Red Alert for $35 for a one month supply. Try Red Alert instead of that afternoon cup of coffee and see how great you will feel. March is National Caffeine Awareness Month Caffeine is consumed in at least one beverage each day by 80% of Americans. It is found in various beverages as well as chocolate. Did you know that it takes only about 500-600 mg of caffeine a day to cause symptoms such as restlessness, anxiety and/or headaches? Here is a list of common caffeinated drinks and how much caffeine each contains:
How much caffeine is too much? A day without a cup of coffee or a cola is unheard of for most people. In fact, 9 in 10 Americans consume some type of caffeine regularly. The effects of caffeine can easily be felt in less than an hour. You are more alert, you feel more productive and your mood is instantly lifted. But the effects of caffeine are often not long lived, leaving you thirsty for more. For most people, 200-300mg (2-3 cups of coffee) are not harmful, but for some who are caffeine sensitive (people with low BMIs, or those under stress), those two-three cups could cause an exaggerated effects of anxiety, restlessness and irritability. About 500-600 mg of caffeine daily, or 4-7 cups of coffee a day, is considered an excessive amount of use. Consumption of this much caffeine could lead to muscle tremors, sleeplessness, headaches, abnormal heart rate and even gastrointestinal problems such as nausea and diarrhea. Abrupt decreases in caffeine can lead to withdrawal, so it is best to decrease the consumption gradually. When trying to curb your caffeine habits, gradually reduce the amount by drinking one less cup of coffee or bottle of soft drink. You may also replace caffeinated drinks with decaffeinated beverages or teas. American Chiropractic is Better Chiropractic. Dr. Daniel W. Talley B.S.D.C. |

American Chiropractic & Acupuncture February Newsletter 928-680-9500 American Heart Month: February Means Heart Disease Awareness! Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. The month of February is dedicated to raising awareness about heart disease and increasing knowledge about prevention. Educate yourself on the dangers of heart disease and get on track to better heart health! Heart disease is the term for all diseases and conditions that affect the heart. It is the “cardio” component of cardiovascular disease, which also includes diseases of the vascular system (blood vessels). Coronary artery disease, one type of heart disease, is the leading cause of heart attacks. The most common cause of coronary artery disease is atherosclerosis, a condition that occurs when plaque builds up in the arteries that supply blood to the heart. Around 16 million Americans have heart disease. Heart disease is the #1 cause of death for both men and women and 50% of men and 64% of women who died suddenly of heart disease had no previous symptoms. Warning signs- If you have coronary artery disease, you may experience chest pain or shortness of breath. Both of these symptoms are also common symptoms of heart attack, so if you experience either one you should get medical attention immediately. Risk factors- Some risk factors cannot be changed, including family history of heart disease, increasing age, and being male. However, there are several established risk factors for heart disease that are controllable. These include smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, physical inactivity, being overweight or obese, and diabetes. Elevated C-reactive protein is now also considered a risk factor. You can reduce your risk of getting heart disease by eliminating any risk factors you can. Chiropractic and Acupuncture can help Heart Disease Chiropractic care re-establishes harmony and balance between your brain, spinal cord, nerves and body structure. This improves the health of your bones, nerves, muscles, glands, brain, organs and tissues, releasing energy for healing. Chiropractic increases resistance to disease and helps your body cleanse and detoxify. It may make the difference between a life of suffering and illness and a life of ease and health. Acupuncture can improve the prospects of people with severe heart failure, research has shown. Researchers found the ancient Chinese practice has the potential to dramatically reduce the pressure on the heart. Acupuncture has been used successfully and with long-range results in improving hypertension. This is because it can reduce activity in the sympathetic nervous system, which regulates involuntary movements such as heartbeat and blood pressure. If you or someone you know is suffering from heart disease or high blood pressure, please call 928-680-9500 and make an appointment today. American Chiropractic is Better Chiropractic. Dr. Daniel W. American Chiropractic & Acupuncture January Newsletter 928-680-9500 5 Things You Don't Know About Green Tea- By now, we know that drinking green tea is undoubtedly good for our bodies. The antioxidant and free-radical scavenging properties of green tea have made it a must-have for the health conscious and numerous studies highlight the potential benefits of green tea including cancer prevention and weight loss. But green tea isn’t just a delicious and healthful drink; it can also be used as an at-home health and beauty remedy. Here are 5 things you don’t know about green tea. 1. It’s great for teeth: Green tea has fluoride in it, making it a superstar for keeping gums and teeth healthy. Green tea can even be used as a mouthwash to maintain breath. 2. It’s a room deodorizer: Green tea leaves have traditionally been used to naturally absorb odors in a room. Place tea leaves in a bowl to help absorb unpleasant odors or leave some in the fridge in place of baking soda. 3. It’s good for the bones: Naturally high in minerals, green tea aids in strong bone density, which is important for maintaining good posture. 4. It can soothe skin: Spent a little too much time in the sun? Use the naturally calming properties of green tea to soothe sunburned skin. Place green tea in a spray bottle and mist on sunburned areas for all-natural relief. Because it has anti-bacterial qualities, green tea can also be used as an antiseptic to spray on skin blemishes or irritations. 5. It’s good for the feet: Soaking tired feet in green tea can prevent unpleasant fungal infections. 5 Immune-Boosting Foods- Keep illness at bay with these healthy ingredients. 1. Yogurt. It contains probiotics that strengthen the immune system. In a recent study, people who ate three-quarters of a cup of yogurt daily for a year had 25% fewer colds than those who didn’t. 2. Eggs. Eggs are packed with amino acids, zinc and B vitamins. Eggs build white blood cells and antibodies which the body needs to fight off illnesses. 3. Red bell peppers. One pepper contains a whopping 200 mg or more of vitamin C (an orange, by comparison, provides about 70). 4. Ginger. Ginger is an age-old Chinese cure-all for colds, that may fight viruses by helping your body sweat out toxins. 5. Garlic. It contains sulfur-based compounds that may keep your body free of infection by boosting your immune system. If you do start feeling stuffy, also try skipping dessert. Sugar causes your body to secrete large quantities of insulin, which suppresses the release of a hormone that helps regulate the immune system. Excessive amounts of sugar also deplete crucial B vitamins needed by the liver to detoxify the body. We, at American Chiropractic and Acupuncture also recommend that people of all ages add chiropractic to their strategy for warding off and fighting the flu and its effects this season. Chiropractic adjustments correct spinal abnormalities called vertebral subluxations that result in interference of the nervous system by placing pressure on nerves. Since the nervous system controls all functions of the body, including the immune system, chiropractic care can have a positive effect on immune function. If you or someone you know is suffering from a seasonal cold or flu, call 928-680-9500 and make an appointment today. American Chiropractic is Better Chiropractic. Dr. Daniel W. Talley B.S.D.C. |
